Tips for a healthy and well-balanced diet

Divide your meals into three main meals and three in-between snacks. By doing so you will be increasing your intestine activities, spending more energy to digest food and making your distended stomach recover its normal size. Always prefer quieter places to have your meals in and, without any hurry, chew the food at least thirty times so that you can feel full soon and thus eat less. Start your meal with a salad of raw vegetables and you will feel that the fibers will make you less hungry. Should you finish your meal and still feel hungry, eat only the raw salad again. Beverages in general, mainly sodas, must be avoided because they distend the stomach. Drink plenty of water between the meals to clean your body and have it functioning normally. Eat less sugar for it is very caloric and not good for your health. Prefer light or fat-free products in order to reduce the calories intake. Give preference to lean meat, fish or skinless chicken and cook them in little oil. Eat less pasta, bread, cereal and sweets. Physical exercises are essential to burn located fat and lose weight. Don´t exercise with your stomach full, otherwise the energy necessary for the digestion will be used in the physical activity. Don´t sleep just after the meals and don´t eat hard-digestive food at night, at this period of the day the digestion is slower.

There is a trinomial to maintain weight that brings you permanent results. The treatment for losing and maintaining weight is based on three pillars: dietary re-education, physical activity and emotional stability. The dietary re-education is a learning process that consists of specific nutritional advice, where the individual learns new eating habits, which make him/her aware of the correct food to choose for his/her meals, both in a qualitative and quantitative way. The dietary re-education is not a diet, but a way to rescue the true meaning of eating: to nourish the body in the healthiest way possible. It can be applied to people with inappropriate eating habits both in a preventive and therapeutic way.

Physical activities must be properly monitored. There is no point in trying to run in the park one day and never doing it again. In this case a physician or physical activity instructor´s advice is essential for the individual to realize his/her own limits. According to some professionals, walking for 40 minutes every day is of great help. Swimming, running, biking and aerobics are also good activities for losing weight. On the other hand, weight lifting and located gym are good exercises to shape muscles and avoid sagging, but they are not efficient when the goal is to lose weight.

Psychological factors are also very important to lose and maintain weight. The so much spoken willpower lies on the fact that the individual searches and tries to ensure his/her own emotional stability to allow him/her to face new eating habits and to achieve his/her own goals. Actually, the willpower is not related only to "want". Rationally the individual is overweight, he wants (and needs) to lose weight, but the consecutive failures already experienced in previous different diets decrease his/her willpower. For this reason, more important than wanting is persisting. One way of making this willpower prevail is to value minor conquests. It increases the self-esteem and turns into an important tool in the fight against overweight. Yes, with the trinomial ( well-balanced diet, physical activity and emotional stability) it is possible to maintain healthy weight.

An essay published in the journal OPTICAL SOCIETY of AMERICA in late 2006 confirmed through a new technique what many experts in dermatology had already noticed in their clinics: that women lose collagen faster than men. Collagen is a protein that supports the cells, keeping them together. It forms a matrix in the skin that hosts many substances and cells, being essential to the maintenance of the form and integrity of the tissue, providing the skin with firmness and resilience. Dr. Johannes Köhler, a dermatologist from Friedrich Schiller University, in Germany, conducted a research in which a laser technique was used to measure the damage skin caused by the sun. Dr. Köhler and his collaborators made a combination of methods to obtain collagen and elastin images, and it showed that their degeneration provokes wrinkles and a progressive loss of the skin resilience.

Tests performed directly on the forearm of 18 volunteers (7 women, 11 men) with age ranging from 21 to 84, showed many variations, but in average, the factor collagen/elastin showed a clear relation to the patient´s age, with women losing collagen much faster than men.

Daily care decreases skin oiliness and helps it look drier and less oily, but washing the face all the time doesn´t work; the right thing to do is to take appropriate care and always keep the skin hydrated and protected. The best is to wash the face twice a day, in the morning and before going to bed, with skin-drying soaps, preferably indicated by a dermatologist. It is recommended the use of a facial tonic after the soap to remove pollution sediments, make-up and even the soap. As to moisturizers and sunscreens, always choose the oil-free products because they don´t obstruct the pores. Take care with water temperature: it can be neither too hot, nor too cold. Avoid rubbing down the towel to dry your face, it may irritate your skin; just tap the towel lightly on your face. If oiliness still persists, you should visit a dermatologist and resource to special acids or oral medicines. The retinoic acid is one of the most used resources for the cleansing and the daily maintenance of the skin.
